George W. Bush 1989 - 1993
George H. W. Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts in
1924. At the age of 18 he became the U.S. Navy's youngest commissioned
pilot, and flew in 58 combat missions during World War II. His service
earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he was graduated from
Yale University, and became a successful businessman in the Texas oil
industry. In 1966 he was elected to the House of Representatives, but left
the Congress after an unsuccessful bid for the Senate in 1970. During the
70's Bush held a number of national posts, and was elected Vice-President under
Ronald Regan in 1980. He was elected President in 1988. As President, Bush continued Ronald Reagan's conservative
policies. He encouraged the fall of Communism in Europe, an in 1990 he
successfully oversaw a U.S. led military confrontation with Iraq over the Iraqi
occupation of Kuwait. Although very popular during his first years in
office, by 1992 the United States had slipped into a mild recession, and Bush
lost his bid for re-election.
