Grover Cleveland 1885 - 1889, 1893 - 1897

Picture of Grover Cleveland
Grover Cleveland was born to a Presbyterian minister in 1837 in upstate New York.  Cleveland spend much of his adult life practicing law, and in 1881 he was elected Mayor of Buffalo, and shortly thereafter, Governor of New York.  In 1884 he was elected President as a Democrat, the first since before The Civil War.  Cleveland did not win re-election in 1888, but he ran again in 1892 and won.  Cleveland is the only President to serve two non-consecutive terms.  As President Cleveland signed the Interstate Commerce Act, the first major legislation regulating railroads.  He also worked to rid the government of granting favors to special interest groups.  He also strove to curb the influence of the wealthy industrialists, a group which had grown extremely powerful by the late 19th century.  During his second term, Cleveland faced the nation's worst economic depression to-date, and his inability to lead the nation back to prosperity cost him the Democratic nomination in 1896.  Once out of office he retired to his home in New York where he died in 1908.
