William J. Clinton 1993 - 2001
William J. Clinton was born in Hope, Arkansas in
1946. As a young man Clinton attended Georgetown University, Oxford
University, and Yale Law School where he was graduated in 1973. Clinton
was elected Arkansas Attorney General in 1976, and Governor of Arkansas in
1978. He served 3 terms, and in 1992 he was elected President. He
was re-elected in 1996. As President, Clinton secured landmark trade
agreements with foreign countries, and presided over a long period of
American economic prosperity. He also secured a number of social
reforms such as the Family Medical Leave Act. Regarding foreign policy,
Clinton strove to build prosperity in the former Communist countries, and was
faced with a number of minor conflicts in countries such as Somalia and
Serbia. He also strove, unsuccessfully, to secure permanent peace in the
Middle East. Clinton's record has been
tarnished as a result of an inappropriate relationship he had with a White House
intern, and questions regarding his honesty about the relationship while under
oath. He was impeached, but not convicted, in 1998.
