Calvin Coolidge 1923 - 1929
Calvin Coolidge was born in Plymouth, Vermont on July 4,
1872, the son of a local storekeeper. As a young man he was graduated
from Amherst college, and he entered in to law practice in Northampton,
Massachusetts. He entered into local politics, and he eventually rose to
become that state's Governor. In 1920 he ran for Vice-President on the
ticket of Warren G. Harding, and became President after Harding's death in
1923. He was elected for a second term in 1924. As President,
Coolidge was very conservative, favoring tax cuts, American isolationism, and
opposing farm relief measures. Although cordial and accessible, Coolidge
was known to be soft-spoken and often spend little time performing official
Presidential duties. Coolidge did not run for a third term in 1928, and he
died in 1933.
