Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in Texas in 1890, but grew up in Abilene, Kansas.  As a young man he was graduated from West Point, and he served in World War I and in a number of military positions during the 1920's and 30's.  After the U.S. entered World War II in 1941, Eisenhower became the supreme commander of the European theater and became a national hero when the war ended.  After the war, Eisenhower served briefly as President of Columbia University and as commander of the NATO alliance.  He was elected President in 1952 as a Republican, and was re-elected in 1956.  As President, Eisenhower sought to ease the growing tensions with the Soviet Union.  He also helped negotiate a truce between North and South Korea in 1953.  Domestically, Eisenhower sought stability, and proposed no major social or economic reforms.  He is best known for the establishment of the Interstate Highway System.  Eisenhower died in 1969.
