Gerald R. Ford 1974 - 1977
Gerald Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1913 and was
raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As a young man he was graduated from The
University of Michigan and Yale Law School. In 1948 he was elected to the
House of Representatives as a Republican, and served as House Minority Leader
from 1965 until 1973 when he was chosen by President Nixon to replace outgoing
Vice-President Spiro Agnew. Ford became President in 1974 after Nixon
resigned. As President Ford supported conservative social and economic
policies as the nation entered into an economic recession. Ford focused
much of his attention on the economy, and vetoed a number of Congressional
appropriations bills which he believed would cause inflation. With regards
to foreign policy, Ford negotiated nuclear weapons limitation agreements with
the Soviet Union. He also negotiated a temporary peace between Israel and
other Middle Eastern countries, laying the groundwork for future peace
agreements.
