Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, New York in 1882.  As a young man he was graduated from Harvard University and Columbia Law School.  In 1910 he was elected to the New York State Senate, and in 1928 he was elected Governor of that state.  Roosevelt was elected President in 1932 as a Democrat.  He would be re-elected 3 times.  Roosevelt was elected during the Great Depression, and he spent his first two terms focusing on economic recovery.  He is best know for the New Deal, which was a series of bold federal programs designed to create jobs and re-structure the U.S. economy.  Many new deal programs, such as Social Security and the Tennessee Valley Authority, have become vital American institutions.  Roosevelt spent his third and fourth terms guiding America through World War II, which the U.S. entered in December, 1941.  Toward the end of the war Roosevelt became a major figure in the establishment of the United Nations.  He died while in office on April 12, 1945.
