Ulysses S. Grant 1869 - 1877
Born in 1822 in Ohio to a working class family,
as a young man Grant was graduated from West Point, and served in the Mexican
War (1846-48) under General Zachary Tayor. He engaged in a number
of pursuits until the Civil War began. At that time he joined the
Union Army to lead a group of volunteers in Missouri, and he quickly rose
in rank due to his skills as a military commander. Grant led the
Army that defeated General Lee in 1865, and after the war he became a national
hero in the North. He was elected President in 1868 and served two
terms. Grant's tenure as President was tainted with a number of scandals
among his cabinet members, although he was an honest man and did not condone
their behavior. As President Grant oversaw Radical Reconstruction
in the South, but he gradually withdrew Northern occupation troops.
The last were removed after he left office in 1877. Once out of office
Grant participated in a number of unsuccessful business pursuits.
He died in 1885.
