John F. Kennedy 1961 - 1963
John F. Kennedy was born in 1917 in Brookline,
Massachusetts as the son of a successful businessman. Kennedy was
graduated from Harvard University in 1940, and served as a PT boat captain
during World War II. After the war he was elected to the U.S. Congress and
advanced to the Senate in 1953. Despite being an undistinguished Senator,
he remained popular because of his energy and youthful charisma. Kennedy
won a Pulitzer Prize in 1956 for his book Profiles in Courage. He
was elected President in 1960. As President Kennedy placed opposition to
Communism at the top of his foreign policy agenda. Domestically, Kennedy
took a firm stand for racial justice, and eventually called for an end to all
racial segregation in the U.S. Kennedy also proposed a number of other
social reforms. Kennedy never lived to see much of his domestic agenda
materialize. On November 23, 1963 he was assassinated while riding in an
open vehicle during parade in Dallas, Texas.
