Ronald Reagan 1981 - 1989
Ronald Reagan was born in 1911 in Tampico, Illinois and
as a young man was graduated from Eureka College. Reagan began his
professional life as a radio broadcaster in 1937, but soon entered acting and
eventually became a Hollywood actor appearing over 50 films. He served in
the Navy during World War II, and after the war he became president of the
Screen Actors Guild, during which time he developed conservative political
views. In 1966 he was elected governor of California. He was elected
President in 1980, and was re-elected in 1984. As President Reagan pursued
Conservative social and economic policies. As the economy recovered from
the recession of the 1970's, Reagan pursued aggressive tax cuts. An ardent
anti-Communist, Regan confronted the Soviet Union by dramatically increasing
military spending. Although the American economy prospered during the
Reagan years, Reagan was unable to control an exploding national debt, which at
the end of his second term was more than 2.5 trillion.
