Theodore Roosevelt 1901 - 1909

    Teddy Roosevelt was born into a wealthy New York family in 1858.  Although he led a privilidged childhood, he was frequently ill as a young boy.  Roosevelt emerged as a public figure as the leader of the "Rough Rider" regiment during the Spanish American War (1898).  His notoriety as a leader propelled him to national fame, and in 1898 he was elected governor of New York.  William Mckinley choose him as his vice-presidential running mate in 1900, and Roosevelt assumed the presidency after Mckinley's assassination in 1901.  Roosevelt proved to be one of Americas most popular and dynamic presidents.  Internationally Roosevelt worked by increase American status abroad.  He negotiated a peace in the Russo-Japanese war (1904), and he also secured construction of the Panama Canal.  Domestically, Roosevelt pushed through landmark legislation reducing the power of trusts, and he improved consumer protection.  He also made important accomplishments in natural conservation.  He left office in 1909 after a second term, but he ran unsuccessfully for a third term in 1912.  He died in 1919.
