George Washington 1789 - 1797
Born to a planter family in Virginia in 1732, Washington
grew up in a household which emphasized an enlightened education, and a
strong sense of duty toward one's fellow man. As a young man Washington
served in the French and Indian War (1754 -1760) and earned the rank of
Lt. Colonel. After the war Washington served in the Virginia House
of Burgesses, and became increasingly active among those who opposed British
impositions upon the colonies. In 1775 Washington served as a Virginia
delegate to the Continental Congress, and became Commander in Chief of
the Continental Army, which fought the British in the War for Independence.
A national hero after the war, Washington was elected first president in
1790, after the ratification of The Constitution. He was re-elected
in 1794. As president he devoted most of his energy to foriegn policy,
and argued strongly against the development of strong political parties.
After his second term expired Washington retired to his home at Mount Vernon
where he died in 1799.
