William H. Harrison 1841
Born in 1773 to a prosperous Virginia family, William
Henry Harrison as a young man became well educated in a variety of academic
fields. Following the tradition of his family, in 1791 Harrison joined
the army, and moved west where he would eventually settle. Once in
the Northwest he served in a variety of military functions, and in 1798
he became a delegate to Congress from the Northwest territory. In
1801 he became governor of Indiana territory. Never fully divorced
from military service, Harrison became a national hero in 1811 when he
and his soldiers successfully repulsed an attack on his camp by Northwest
Indians in the battle of Tippecannoe. He became a General in the
War of 1812, and his military exploits brought him more fame among the
American people. In 1838 his fame led the Whig party to choose him
as their candiate, and he won the election in a landslide. One month
after taking office in 1839 he developed pnemonia and died.
