Woodrow Wilson 1913 - 1921

Picture of Woodrow Wilson
Woodrow Wilson was born in Virginia in 1856.  As a young man he became very well educated, earning a number of degrees including a law degree from the University of Virginia and a Doctorate from Johns Hopkins University.  In 1902 Wilson became President of Princeton University, and in 1907 he was elected governor of New Jersey.  He was elected President in 1912 as a Democrat and served 2 terms.  Domestically, Wilson oversaw a number of important pieces of legislation.  He lowered the tariff, established the Federal Reserve System, and established the Federal Trade Commission.  Internationally, Wilson guided America through World War I (1914-1918). Wilson first strove to prevent American entry into the conflict.  In 1917, believing neutrality no longer possible, Wilson supported American entry and proved to be an outstanding war time leader.  After the war Wilson sought, unsuccessfully, to redefine the relationship between Western nations so as to possibly prevent future wars.  Wilson left office in 1921, and died in 1924.
