The three Tennessee Presidents played significant roles in the growth and development of the United States. Their legacies are being preserved through the editorial projects which work in conjunction with the Tennessee Presidents Trust. To date 29 volumes of documents from the three Presidents have been published, with new volumes being completed on a regular basis.
All three
of the editorial projects receive prestigious research grants from both the
National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Historical Publications
and Records Commission. However, the papers do need your support, and your
membership in the
Trust will help secure the legacy of the Tennessee Presidents for future
generations.
The Papers of Andrew Jackson:
The Jackson Project employs three
full-time editors, one quarter-time editor, and one full-time staff
assistant. It is headed by Professor Dan Feller. Volumes six and
seven are in progress with volume six likely to go to the press later this year.
The Correspondence of James K. Polk
The Polk Project employs three editors and one part-time staff assistant (who also works as needed for the Trust). It is headed by Professor Wayne Cutler. Dr. Cutler also serves as head of the Trust and teaches part-time in The University of Tennessee History Department. The Polk Project expects to complete volume 10 in the present calendar year.
The Papers of Andrew Johnson:
Volume sixteen of the Andrew Johnson papers has now been completed, thus completing the series. During the project's thirty-four year history the papers were edited by Professors Leroy P. Graf, Ralph W. Haskins, and Paul Bergeron. Dr. Bergeron finished the series and is now retired.
